| COATED ABRASIVE CLOTH & PAPER SLITTING A coated abrassive consists of a flexible-type backing upon which a film of adhesive holds and supports a coating of abrasive grains. The backing may be cloth or paper, the adhesive grains aluminum-oxide, alumina-zirconia, silicon carbide, emery, or other materials. The coated abrasive manufacturer produces this material in large, heavy wide rolls. they also supply the large rolls to the converter industry. Here, the smaller rolls, belts, sheets, discs and other products are made for the user market. |
| The score cutter must have the beam strength to resist deflection and wobble under pressure and must also be made of a steel that has a high hardness and the property of high resistance to wear. Picture the cutter edge revolving as the abrasive grains on the cloth rush by wearing down the steel by their abrasive cutting action. The function of many grades of abrasive cloth belts is to cut steel and other metals by the action of the multi-faceted abrasive grains embedded in these belts. The function of the score cutter is to efficiently, cleanly and economically slit this material. The standard score cutter is not designed for this operation. Many years ago a specially ground SELF SHARPENING blade was developed, and is still the most widely used score cutter in the industry today. The knife blade is ground with a long secondary tapering angle from the cutting edge primary double bevel back to the hub diameter. This angle provides the beam strength the blade must have and prevents the quick rounding up to a blunt non-cutting edge that other knife design edges experience. |
| The breakdown of the wide rolls into various smaller widths is done by score cut slitter knives. The score cutter, in operation, is pressed down under heavy pressure onto the hardened platen roll as the material passes forward between the roll and the slitter wheel. |
| The abrasive grains passing by in effect resharpen the knife edge to maintain the cutting action of the blade. Many users run the Self Sharp Style knives until the blade is eventually worn right down to the hub without ever taking the knife off for regrinding. Imagine the production time and money saved! |
